Former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate after a nasty primary battle over who was the more conservative candidate.
The Associated Press called the race at 8:15 p.m. for Hagerty with nearly 52 percent of the vote.
Hagerty had the backing of President Trump and U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn.
Nashville orthopedic trauma surgeon Dr. Manny Sethi finished a strong second in the race.
The political newcomer had the backing of Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul and talk radio host Mark Levin.
Hagerty will face progressive candidate Marquita Bradshaw in the general election. The Memphis resident secured the Democratic nomination in a surprise victory.
