The owner of the Mercedes, the victim of the attempted carjacking, was not injured.

Memphis Police Department Lt. Col. Rodney Adair tells the Commercial Appeal that there may have been as many as four people involved in the attempted robbery. He said the suspects tried to take the white Mercedes SUV at gunpoint.

“The victim was able to retrieve a handgun, turn around and fired shots, striking two,” Adair said. One of the attempted robbers died, one was injured, and the vehicle owner was unharmed, Adair said.

The shooting happened near the corner of Kirby Parkway and Poplar in East Memphis.

Memphis Police said two people have been shot. One of the injured victims was pronounced dead at the hospital. At least one person has been detained.

“One person has been detained pending further investigation.” MPD said on Twitter.

Kroger released a statement saying they were “saddened by today’s incident.”

“We’re grateful to our store associates and customers who quickly notified local authorities, and we are providing any support needed for the investigation,” the spokesperson said.

God bless the Second Amendment!
