An armed motorist reportedly stopped two alleged carjackers in the parking lot of the Kroger gas station in East Memphis. One of the carjackers was killed and the other was wounded.

Memphis Police Department Lt. Col. Rodney Adair tells the Commercial Appeal that there may have been as many as four people involved in the attempted robbery. “The victim was able to retrieve a handgun, turn around and fired shots, striking two,” Adair said. One of the attempted robbers died, one was injured, and the vehicle owner was unharmed, Adair said.
The shooting happened near the corner of Kirby Parkway and Poplar in East Memphis.
Memphis Police said two people have been shot. One of the injured victims was pronounced dead at the hospital. At least one person has been detained.“One person has been detained pending further investigation.” MPD said on Twitter.
Officers are on the scene of a shooting at 6660 Poplar Avenue. Two individuals have been shot. One of the individuals was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The second individual is in non-critical condition. One person has been detained pending further investigation.

Kroger released a statement saying they were “saddened by today’s incident.”
“We’re grateful to our store associates and customers who quickly notified local authorities, and we are providing any support needed for the investigation,” the spokesperson said.
