Bartlett Confirms Injuries, 5 Arrests In Fireworks Melee
The City of Bartlett released a statement four days after a mob of young people caused mayhem at the annual Independence Day fireworks celebration. Click here to read our exclusive reporting on the incident.
The mob shot fireworks into the crowd causing at least two stampedes. Video also shows the mob storming a nearby McDonald’s restaurant and they tried to storm a Kroger grocery store.
The city said the incidents were isolated and “unexpected activity” that “startled some attendees and caused a temporary disruption as people moved away from the area.”
“Officers responded immediately, dispersed those responsible, restored order and the fireworks show continued as planned,” the city said.
They said at least five juveniles were arrested and charged with various offensives including disorderly conduct and drug possession. The city said the investigation continues and additional charges are under review.
The Bartlett Fire Department responded to give calls for service throughout the event and transported at least three individuals to the hospital including a person who suffered a cardiac event.
“We understand the incident was frightening for many families who were present,” the city said in its statement. “At the same time, we are thankful that our public safety teams were able to respond quickly, prevent the situation from escalation, and help ensure the event concluded safely.”
The city called out what they referred to as “much speculation circulating online.”
“While rumors spread quickly during large public gatherings, the verified facts remain that officers responded rapidly to isolated incidents involving fireworks, coordinated with emergency medical personnel as needed and maintained a strong law enforcement presence throughout the remainder of the evening,” the statement read.
The city said there were more than 165 public safety personnel were deployed to provide safety for the event – along with drones, mobile security trailers and the city’s camera network.
