John Materna is known around Memphis as Red, the Watermelon Man.

For more than 30 years he’s sold watermelons from the back of his pickup truck at the corner of Homer Street and Wayne Avenue.

The best in town – that’s what the locals say.

The 76-year-old retiree used the profits to fund cruises for his wife, television station WMC reported.

The other day Red became the latest victim in a dystopian crime wave that has turned Memphis into a literal war zone – made all the worse by progressive Democrats who’ve gone soft on crime.

Police say two suspects shot Red in the stomach during an attempted robbery. Red was packing, too. He fired back, but the bad guys are still on the loose.

Red has undergone two surgeries and faces a long recovery. And that’s where we can help.

There’s a GoFundMe page where you can donate money to help cover Red’s medical bills. Click here to make a donation.

“It’s unreal and unbelievable. We never knew how many people he touched just by sitting there selling watermelons and waving at people. That’s what he liked to do, he’s a people person,” son Daniel Materna told Fox 13 about his father.

Let’s take care of the Watermelon Man and his family and let’s pray that one day he will be back on the corner of Homer and Wayne selling those sweet, juicy melons.
