DEVELOPING STORY: A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck northern California early Tuesday morning causing damage and knocking out the power to thousands of homes. There is no immediate word on injuries.

The quake, recorded at 2:34 a.m. PT, was centered in the Pacific just off the coast, about 7.5 miles from the coastal Humboldt County city of Ferndale, the survey said. That’s about a 20-mile drive southwest of Eureka and a 280-mile drive northwest of Sacramento.

Video shows heavy damage in the town of Ferndale.

The sheriff’s department posted a message on social media urging people not to call 9-11 unless the emergency is dire.

Caroline Titus, the publisher of the Ferndale Express, posted video from inside her home showing lots of damage.
