Memphis police are searching for a wallaby that escaped from the Memphis Zoo.
The wallaby escaped as zoo personnel were evacuating animals during a flash flood inside the KangaZoo exhibit.
Lick Creek runs around the exhibit and overflowed during the severe storms that hit the Memphis area late Wednesday.
“All animals inside of KangaZoo were relocated to the animal hospital,” the zoo said in a statement. “Upon counting the animals, one wallaby was unaccounted for. Immediately, zoo staff began searching for the missing animal during the massive storm. Zoo staff has continued actively searching for the animal this morning, however, the wallaby has still not been located.”
Wallabies are smaller in stature than kangaroos. They are gentle animals, but fairly skittish. If spotted, please do not approach.
If anyone spots the wallaby, please report it by calling the Memphis Zoo at 901-333-6500. Please include the location and time of the sighting in your message.
