Bring in the National Guard, Pastor Tells Memphis Mayor

Rev. Kenneth T. Whalum Jr. told KWAM Tuesday city leaders are refusing to call in the Tennessee National Guard to combat violent crime.

Whalum said he urged Mayors Jim Strickland (Memphis) and Lee Harris (Shelby County) – both men he called personal friends – to reach out to the state and request troops to protect the city’s neighborhoods.

“I have reached out to both of them separately, personally – twice – to ask them to consider making a request of the governor to send a detail of Tennessee National Guard,” the well-known pastor told KWAM hosts Ben Deeter and Todd Starnes. “And on both them, on two occasions, have clearly said ‘no.'”

The Memphis pastor also took to social media to voice his thoughts on the rampant crime:
