Redd and his partner had responded to a call about a trespasser at the Poplar-White Station Library at 12:32 p.m. on Feb. 2.

The suspect, identified as Torence Jackson, Jr., opened fire, striking Redd. His partner returned fire and killed Jackson.

It turned out Jackson had been in and out of jail nearly 40 times since 2017.

“Officer Redd was struck by gunfire and rushed to Regional One Hospital in extremely critical condition,” the department said in a statement. “Despite the best efforts and excellent medical care by those at Regional One, Officer Redd succumbed to his injuries on February 18, 2023, at the hospital.”

Redd served Memphis in the Old Allen, Union, Raines, Mt Moriah, Ridgeway, and Appling Farms Stations.

He also served his country as a United States Marine.

The police department shared two Bible verses in their press release:

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7 and “Well done, thou good and faithful servant……” Matthew 25:21

“Rest easy, Officer Redd. You will be missed,” the police department said in a statement.
