The Memphis Police Association has filed a counterclaim against the City of Memphis, claiming the rank and file within the Memphis Police Department violated hiring policy.
The controversy started over the creation of a second lieutenant rank.
MPA officials claim the department tried to fast-track the new rank, circumventing hiring and promotional standards.In March, an arbitration judgment found the police department violated its memorandum of understanding.
In response, the city fought back against the ruling, asking to vacate the judgement.
One MPD officer told The Daily Memphian the department has spiraled into complete chaos.“This is the worst that morale has been. If you take away the chaos internally, just the high murder rate and short staffing is enough”
