City Council Goes After Guns with New Ordinance

The Memphis City Council is taking a closer look at an ordinance that would ban guns.

Councilman JB Smiley brought the gun reform resolution forward, which seeks to end constitutional carry, ban so-called assault rifles and make it a crime to store a gun in a car unless it’s in a lock box.

“There’s a proliferation of firearms in the city and if the state elected officials are derelict in their duty, refusing to take care of our people, on the local level, we have an obligation to make sure that people are safe in their homes and their communities and that’s what this ordinance is about,” Smiley told WREG – TV.

The local ordinance directly violates Tennessee’s permit less carry law, which allows residents in Memphis to open carry.

Conservative political contributor Steve Gill slammed the measure to curb gun violence, saying city leaders should start by enforcing the laws that already exist.

“You have folks that are being caught with guns in Memphis and then are back out onto the streets,” Steve told “Wake Up Memphis” hosts Ben Deeter and Todd Starnes Monday. “If you’re caught with a gun and you’re a felon, you’re supposed to go immediately to jail as a federal felony crime and yet we’re not enforcing the laws we have on the books.”

The measure goes before the council Tuesday.
