For Valentine’s Day, the San Antonio Zoo launches a promotion called “Cry Me a Cockroach” where donors can name a rat or cockroach after an ex.

The San Antonio Zoo launched a promotion called “Cry Me a Cockroach” where people all over the world could donate to the zoo while also getting closure over a past relationship in a unique way.

Tim Morrow, the president and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo joined Tim Van Horn, host of Wake Up Memphis, to discuss the unusual Valentine’s Day promotion.

According to Morrow, donors can pay either $25 for a rat or $5 for a live cockroach to be named after an ex. Then on Valentines Day, people can tune into the zoo’s Facebook live and watch their ex be consumed by the zoo animals.

“You can watch your ex be eaten on Facebook and then get a little closure from your past relationship,” said Morrow on Wake Up Memphis.

The San Antonio Zoo launched this promotion last year before the pandemic hit and according to Morrow, they had over 5,000 donors from 25 different countries.

“It just kind of tells you about the relationship woes worldwide that are happening,” said Morrow. “And then especially during COVID when we’re locked in houses together for 10, 12, or 16 weeks, I’m sure that the numbers will be a bit bigger this year with what we’ve gone through.”
