A city-wide meeting addressing crime came to a screeching halt Thursday when news broke that two Memphis police officers were ambushed in Whitehaven.

Councilman Chase Carlisle, the moderator at last night’s crime summit, recalled the “George Bush moment” when police chief C.J. Davis broke the news. ‘

“CJ Davis stood up and walked over and whispered in my ear that we had two officers down and shot and she needed to respond,” Carlisle told KWAM. “I said ‘I got you’ and just tried to kinda keep a straight face.”

He added: “Kinda had a George Bush moment of just keeping calm and letting [the police] get out and go where they needed to go.”

Davis was one of the panelists at the crime summit until she was quickly ushered out to respond to the officer-involved shooting in Whitehaven.

Both officers are in critical, but stable condition, according to police.

A suspect was shot three times. The TBI is handling the investigation.
