DA Mulroy Touts New Cashless Bail System: Fewer People in Jail

District Attorney Steve Mulroy’s bail reform program officially started Wednesday in Shelby County, which critics argue will make streets less safe.

The plan, which is advertised to reduce occupancy in the county jail, will make it easy for criminals to be released without bond.

This bail reform program comes just months after Mulroy was sworn in, and it’s been one of the first items on his agenda.

”There will be a lot fewer people who really shouldn’t be behind bars,” he told Action News 5 in January, “and are only there because they can’t afford cash bail.”

However, many fear this policy will only put more dangerous criminals back out onto the streets.

Yearly, roughly 56,000 inmates are booked for the Shelby County jail.
