The city of Memphis has elected a new mayor.

Only about 23 percent of registered voters turned out for the Memphis mayor race, in which 17 candidates competed. However, Paul Young garnered enough votes to beat out Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner.

Bonner, who was endorsed by the Shelby County Republican Party, came in second Thursday night.

“I think we dodged several bullets,” one listener wrote on KWAM’s Stop Memphis Crime Page. “So thankful Van Tuner lost. I’m hopeful Young and Bonner can work together to get crime under control. I’ll be praying for them.”

Democrat Young has been serving as the President and CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission.

Ben Deeter, host of “Wake Up Memphis,” said he has some “concerns” regarding the new mayor.

“Look, the people have spoken,” Memphis City Councilman and former Memphis mayor candidate Frank Colvett Jr. told KWAM.

Nationally syndicated radio host and KWAM owner Todd Starnes chimed in on the concerns that Young was a “trojan horse” candidate for progressive causes.

“We don’t know a lot about the guy,” Starnes said. “He doesn’t have a political track record, he is a political novice.”
