Residents in one East Memphis neighborhood say they are sick and tired of living in fear because of non-stop gunfire and street races.

“Hundreds of people shooting like Afghanistan or something,” one furious citizen told radio station KWAM 990 AM.

The shootings and street races happened around 8 p.m. Friday on Poplar and Polar Extended neary the Hopdoddy Burger Bar in the Poplar Commons shopping district. There were also reports of heavy gunfire in the nearby Shady Grove area.

The woman said her sister-in-law was “stuck in her house because of automatic weapon fire and people doing donuts over and over. She was scared to leave.”

“People are prisoners in their own house,” she said.

Other neigbhors fired off complaints on the Stop Memphis Crime page noting that the street takeovers are becoming a regular occurrance even in places like East Memphis.

“I was watching TV at 11pm last night and heard like 10-12 gun shots at Perkins Extd and Shady Grove. Unbelievable,” another resident said.

Memphis Police told KWAM they were investigating the complaints from residents in the area.
