Memphis mayoral candidates presented their visions for a safer city Monday night, suggesting solutions like emptying jails and buying unruly kids drones to distract them from breaking laws.

Candidates included city councilman Frank Colvett Jr., Memphis-Shelby County School Board Chair Michelle McKissack, businessman J.W. Gibson, Downtown Memphis Commission President Paul Young and State Rep. Karen Camper (D-Memphis).

At one point during the forum hosted by the Daily Memphian, McKissack said jailing criminals is not a deterrent to crime.

Camper said the city should give kids access to the culinary arts like an appearance on the Food Network’s “Chopped,” instead of being out on the streets past curfew.

KWAM radio host Todd Starnes scoffed at Camper’s suggestion that offering food courses would keep kids out of juvenile detention centers.

“Yes, let’s give the criminal children access to knives. That’s an excellent idea. And drones, too. At taxpayer expense,” Starnes said.
