Memphis Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant has been suspended for eight games by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver after brandishing a firearm during a live video on social media.

The incident took place during an Instagram live video inside a Denver nightclub, where Morant was seen holding a firearm while appearing intoxicated and interacting with his followers. The video quickly went viral and raised concerns about Morant’s safety and responsibility.

“Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless, and potentially very dangerous,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement responding to the incident. “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him. He has expressed sincere contrition and remorse for his behavior.”

Morant issued a statement apologizing for his actions and expressing regret for any harm or concern he may have caused.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and understand that as an NBA player, I have a responsibility to conduct myself in a professional and respectful manner both on and off the court,” he said.

The Grizzlies also released a statement expressing their disappointment in Morant’s behavior and their commitment to helping him.

“We take these matters very seriously and will continue to work with Ja to ensure that he learns from this experience and grows as a player and a member of our community,” the statement read.

Morant will be eligible to return to the court for the Grizzlies on March 20th.
