Former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton dismissed questions over his age after a handful of his opponents called him out for seeking a sixth term in office.

The 83-year-old told KWAM Tuesday his age shows experience and wisdom, adding he’s not frail like President “Joe Biden.”

“At 83, if you want to come and walk several miles with me, go to the gym with me then let’s get it on,” Herenton said. “I’m not your typical 83-year-old. I’m not a Joe Biden.”

Herenton held office for five terms between 1992 and 2009.

“In 2023, when I look at the city of Memphis and all of its tremendous problems and challenges ahead, I’m motivated, I’m energized because there’s another mountain to climb,” Herenton said.
