Hernando Devastated by Storm Damage, Emergency Declared

DEVELOPING STORY: An emergency has been declared in Hernando where authorities believe a tornado may have hit the downtown area. Damage is significant. The mayor and Board of Aldermen met earlier today and declared a local emergency.

“Downtown Hernando has been hit pretty hard with what appears to have been a tornado,” Mayor Chip Johnson said. “If you need emergency help, dial 911. Please avoid the area between the court square and the interstate.

The police department urged people to stay off the streets today.

“There are currently trees and power lines down all across the city. Please use extreme caution if you must get out and travel,” the police department said in a statement.

Tarps are being provided to any citizen or business owner who suffered storm damage. The tarps can be picked up at Fire Station 1 at 475 W. Commerce St. behind City Hall.
