July 1 will feature a big change in the sentencing of violent crime in Tennessee.  Truth In Sentencing becomes law in Tennessee that day, meaning “that a person convicted of certain offenses serve 100 percent of the sentence imposed and that a person convicted of certain other offenses serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before becoming eligible for release. ”

Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron joined “Wake Up Memphis” to discuss his visit for today’s ceremony in Memphis.  The event is centered around the legislation, featuring families of violent crime victims, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis, Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner, and District Attorney Amy Weirich.
