The Bluff City already offered a variety of options for coffee fanatics, but JoJo’s Expresso is bringing new flavors to the table.

Taylor Whiddon, owner of JoJo’s Expresso, spoke with Ben Deeter on KWAM’s “Wake Up Memphis” to talk about how they’re expanding, and how their coffee shop stands apart from the dozens of cafes in town.

The name JoJo’s Expresso is named for Whiddon’s his late son, who died from a heart defect just weeks after he was born.

“We found out really four years ago to this day that our second son was he was going to have a pretty bad heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome,” Whiddon explained. “And so he was born on November 7th of 2018 and he was here with us only seven weeks. So he, you know, should have survived the whole thing. But he just couldn’t, couldn’t shake the heart condition and his lungs and everything were badly damaged. So long story short, a year later, when we were talking about this business and everything, we wanted to honor him and remember him by naming this business after him.”

Now, they offer a variety of tasty drinks and baked goods, including gluten-free options.

We have incredible bakers,” Whiddon said. “They are actually opening up their own bakery called Palmer House Bakery. They’re not doing a brick and mortar just yet, but they’re just going to start baking for people like us, for weddings and everything. And they do an incredible job. And people, ever since we started doing the gluten free items, people have been coming coming to us like crazy. Just because a lot of people are gluten free now and our bakers have figured out the recipe to make an amazing gluten free pastry.”

Since opening during the coronavirus pandemic, JoJo’s Expresso has expanded beyond a mobile coffee shop. Most of the trendy Memphis coffee shops are located in the downtown and midtown areas. However, JoJo’s has focused its efforts around Germantown.

Later this year JoJo’s will have a permanent location to add to its traveling business.

“So this past weekend, we celebrated two years of being in business, and it was the perfect time to announce that we are opening up a storefront at Thornwood and Germantown,” Whiddon said.

They’re aiming for an opening date in early fall this year.
