Former Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer has a new gig.

Mayor Lee Harris welcomed the far-left activist to his team Tuesday, appointing her as the county’s new Healthcare Equity Fellow.

“I’m pleased to welcome Commissioner Tami Sawyer as a Healthcare Equity Fellow in the Mayor’s Office of Innovation,” Harris tweeted. “Commissioner Sawyer brings a wealth of experience, a broad network, and a proven commitment to community. We’re glad to have her back home and on the team.”

Health equity is described as helping all people achieve their optimal health, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.

The social justice activist said she is “elated” to be back on board.

“I’m ecstatic to return to Shelby Co Gov’t w Mayor Harris & Chief Inez. This role aligns w/ my ongoing work to reduce disparities in Shelby Co. as a part of the TN Health Disparity task force, a past leader in COVID-19 response, and a public policy PHD student. Elated to be home,” she wrote on Twitter.

Sawyer left the county commission in 2022 to study race and gender rhetorical studies at the University of Memphis.
