KWAM’s Mike Williams, Host of “Behind the Badge,” tells “Wake Up Memphis” with Robyn Walensky “young people are numb to the violence in our city.”

Williams tells Walensky more than a dozen people were shot over the weekend, at least 5 of them killed.

Under arrest, a 24-year-old man who police say admits to shooting and killing his father who was sitting on the couch in his home in South Memphis.

The violent crime problem isn’t just in Memphis, however. All across the country, the number of shootings and murders are skyrocketing in Democrat-run cities like New York City and Chicago.

Vehicles belonging to Memphis firefighters are also being broken into. Recently, four different fire stations were hit with eight cars broken into or shot at. One car was stolen.

Memphis Fire Fighters Association President Thomas Malone tells “Wake Up Memphis”  it takes a lot of time, effort and money to investigate and crack down on the vandalism.

Malone says there’s a plan in place to install security cameras at a minimum of 10 fire stations.

He adds the firehouses have always been a “safe haven.”

“What’s going on now is unprecedented,” he tells Walensky. “It’s a sad thing  this is something we’ve never had to deal with before.”

What makes it even more frustrating for Malone is respect seems to have evaporated for those who proudly wear the uniform.

“For the firefighters, we were kind of like the cavalry come riding in,” he says.

Malone tells ‘Wake Up Memphis’ this level of disrespect and vandalism “tears him up.”
