Memphis City Council Delays Zoo Funding Debate

Memphis City Republican Councilman Frank Colvett Jr. tells ‘Wake Up Memphis’ with Robyn Walensky the Memphis City Council has agreed to delay discussion until next week’s meeting on a proposal to move funds allocated to the Memphis police and fire department over to the Memphis Zoo.
While landmarks like Graceland where Elvis is buried are being vandalized by thugs, at least one member of the Memphis City Council is proposing taking funds from law enforcement and moving the money to the zoo.
Colvett Jr. tells ‘Wake Up Memphis,’ “The chairman of the budget committee Martavius Jones has always had a problem with the Memphis Zoo.”
“Every time there’s a chance to defund the zoo, he of course tries to do it,” Colvett tells ‘Wake Up Memphis.’
“His cover this time,” Colvett explains, “is to take the money for the zoo and use it to help people pay utility bills while taking over $5 million from law enforcement to still fund the zoo.”
“We tabled it for further discussion,” he tells Walensky. “I don’t think it passes, I think everybody sees through this.”
