Memphis City Councilwoman Accuses Firefighters of ‘Raping’ City

Memphis City Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton is facing fierce backlash after she accused firefighters of raping the city. The city council rejected their request for a two percent raise.
The Memphis Fire Fighters Association said the council had agreed to raise pay in 2024 but the raises were not included in the new budget.
Cooper-Sutton blasted firefighters during a recent council meeting — calling them greedy.
“Y’all are wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong,” she said. “And God sees your intentions and sees your hearts and he’s gonna deal with each and everyone of us accordingly.”
Someone at City Hall redacted the councilwoman’s comments she made accusing firefighters of raping the city. It’s not clear if the removal of the comments violated state law.
“Last night, a Memphis City Council member accused our firefighters of raping this city,” Local 1784 wrote in a statement. “They don’t rape our city; they serve our city.”
“The service and sacrifices of the men and women of the MFD is second to none, garnering national attention,” the union added.
They went on to say that calling efforts to restore the promised raise to rape is a “shameful, reckless and unethical comparison.”
