State Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) is facing new opposition within his own party in a June 15 special primary election.

David Page, a local teacher, is the lone Democrat challenging Pearson to be the new representative for District 86 in Memphis, and he told KWAM’s “Wake Up Memphis” it’s time to focus on the district’s constituents, which is something Pearson hasn’t been doing.

“I’m going to stand out of the crowd, but I’m going to stand out of the crowd for representing the people,” he said.

Pearson was elected following the death of the late State Rep. Barbara Cooper (D), who had held the District 86 seat for a number of years. Page worked with Cooper during her time in office, and after hearing continually from constituents following her passing, Page realized that they weren’t being taken care of under Pearson’s leadership.

“His character’s not fitting in with what she would’ve represented,” Page said.

Early voting began on May 26. The winner of the primary will face a lone Independent in the August 3 general election. Find more voting information here.
