A Memphis doctor is lucky to be alive after an attempted carjacking at the busy Kroger fuel station at 6660 Poplar Avenue in East Memphis.

Memphis Police say the doctor was driving a white 2019 Mercedes valued at almost $150,000 dollars. He was filling up his tank when suddenly a man jumped into his car stealing his key fob and was about to take off.

The doctor tells detectives when he opened the drivers side door to get back into his car, the guy quickly slid across to the passenger seat and jumped out.

The doctor tells police he spotted a black Lexus parked just a few feet away and saw the driver of that car, point a gun at him as he was getting out of the vehicle. Police say that’s when the doctor says he pulled his gun and fired several times at the black car.

The 16-year-old man was shot and killed. The second man identified as Willie Murry, shot in the foot.

In his mugshot, the 18-year-old has a distinct skull and bones tattoo on his neck.

Detectives arrested Murry when he showed up at Methodist University Hospital for treatment of his shot foot. He was seen getting out of the same black Lexus, a stolen car worth $30,000 dollars.

Murry is charged with attempted second-degree murder, employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, carjacking and theft of property.

Investigators say Murry admits to trying to steal the doctor’s car, and he admits the black Lexus ES350 used in the crime is a stolen car.

Detectives believe a total of four suspects were involved in this crime.

The investigation is ongoing.
