DEVELOPING STORY: More than 135,000 MLGW customers are without power after a severe thunderstorm brought down power lines and caused major damage across the city.
“A sudden, severe thunderstorm bringing high wind gusts has caused extensive damage across the MLGW service area knocking out power to more than 100, 000 customers. #MLGW is working to assess the damage, repair infrastructure and restore customers as quickly and safely as we can,” MLGW said in a prepared statement.Several homes were destroyed by falling trees and many roadways are blocked by power poles that were snapped in half by the violent winds.
The National Weather Service reports that some wind gusts topped 60 mph.
The greater concern is the looming heat emergency that goes into effect on Wednesday and many hotel rooms in Cordova have already been sold out.
There has been damage to buildings reported in Germantown and power lines down across Collierville. We will have extensive coverage of the outrages and storm repairs starting at 7 a.m. on KWAM where Memphis goes for breaking news.
