Carjackings have doubled in 2023, and repeat offenders are being caught and rereleased back onto the streets, according to law enforcement.

WMC Action News 5’s Joyce Peterson shared the MPD report that 5,573 cars have been stolen in 2023 so far, and we’re not even halfway through the year yet.

Due to Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy’s catch-and-release policies, local police have their hands tied.

To hopefully help curb crime, the Memphis Police released an announcement that they are giving out steering wheel locks on May 23 to help protect vehicles from thieves.

The question of crime continues to be a top priority for Memphians.

One Twitter user responded to the post with the question “Where in the budget is the money for all this coming from?”

Joyce Peterson countered with an even better question: “How many of those 5,573 car thefts were committed by repeat offenders who get arrested and released. Arrested and released. Arrested and released. How long will it b before the needs of the many outweigh the needs of criminals who terrorize our community?”
