‘National Guard Changed the Vibe,’ Says Beale Street Restaurant Owner

Memphis restaurant mogul Jim Losapio said the dining industry is thriving across the Bluff City, in part thanks to the continued presence of National Guard troops ordered by President Donald Trump and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.

“The minute we saw federal agents … it changed the dynamic,” Losapio told KWAM News Radio. Listen to the full interview here.

“Their presence was welcoming to everybody that was on Beale Street for the right reasons, but then it also sent a message to everybody else there which was, you’ve got to play right.”

National Guard members in groups of six or seven patrol the streets throughout town, creating a “great vibe,” Losapio added.

He noted that the “bars and restaurants are as busy as they’ve ever been.”

“We get lots of traffic now from the Grizzlies games, the Tigers games, that I think we didn’t have a year or two ago.”

Beyond the restaurant industry, Losapio said the city in general is more orderly due to the National Guard. For example, people are finally driving the speed limit, he said.
