Nearly 3,300 cars have been stolen since Jan. 1 or one auto theft every 34 minutes in Memphis, according to Memphis Police Department.

That’s compared to fewer than 1,300 during the same period last year, according to the department’s data.

As a result, the massive spike in auto thefts is causing car insurance prices to rise.

“These factors like hit and runs and auto thefts, when they start paying out more money than what’s going in, then they would have to adjust that price,” Sullins told Fox13. “It’s definitely hitting the paycheck-to-paycheck people the most, but it cuts into everyone’s cost.”
