The Museum of Science & History, formerly known as the Pink Palace, canceled their historic “family-friendly” drag show just moments before it was supposed to debut.

The provocative drag show caused massive outrage across the city from families as well as Christian groups. Thousands of KWAM listeners posted messages on our social media platforms condemning the museum.

The Museum blamed the cancellation on what they called “the presence of armed protesters.”

An untold number of people had gathered outside the Pink Palace, but there was evidence of violence. Video filmed by a KWAM news reporter shows protesters shaking hands with officers.

“The safety of our guests and staff members is our primary concern. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of all present, the Museum of Science & History made the decision to cancel all programming Friday evening due to the presence of armed protesters,” the museum said in a statement. “Closing early involved the cancellation of the two events scheduled for the evening, a laser show in our Planetarium and the Memphis Proud drag show and dance party.”

Museum officials had drawn fire for inviting small children to attend the drag show. Many KWAM listeners wondered what drag queens had to do with the mission of the museum.

Shut them down all over the country. There is a place for those performers and that is in adult nightclubs. Stay in your lane.

“Family friendly” couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Family friendly drag show is the definition of an oxymoron!

The only drag events my children will ever attend will involve 800 hp muscle cars and quarter-mile time slips.

When we lived near Memphis, we took our kids to the Pink Palace again and again. I am ashamed that it has fallen to this level. Disgraceful.

A museum staffer said the show was safe for children because the performers had promised to keep their clothes on. The staffer also said there was not a venue in Memphis were underage children could attend a drag show.

Many residents are calling for an investigation into whether taxpayer money is being used to fund the Pink Palace.
