Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner blasted District Attorney Steve Mulroy for interfering in the mayors race.

During an interview with KWAM’s Ben Deeter Thursday, Bonner said he is considering the possibility of asking the Tennessee Attorney General to investigate Mulroy over allegations of election interference.

“Its something we’ve thought about and will probably have more conversations about today and tomorrow,” Bonner said. “All we want is a fair shake, that’s all I’m asking.”

Bonner called the charges levied against 201 jailers involved in the death of Gershun Freeman “not warranted” and “political.”

Mulroy is a vocal supporter of mayoral candidate Van Turner, but denies Bonner’s accusation.

“I endorsed Van Turner for Mayor before Mr. Freeman died in the Shelby County Jail and before Sheriff Bonner declared his candidacy” Mulroy said in a statement provided to WREG. “To keep politics out of the case, I recused myself and requested another DA be appointed, a common practice among DAs which is not at all unusual.”
