Sixth Officer Related to Tyre Nichols Case Relieved of Duty

A sixth Memphis Police Department (MPD) officer has been relieved of duty following the release of the graphic Tyre Nichols’ arrest footage to the public Friday.

Action News 5 reports the officer, Preston Hemphill, was suspended by the MPD on Sunday, Jan. 15 and is the subject of an ongoing investigation.

The police department hasn’t reported Hemphill’s role in the confrontation.

Five other officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmit Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith — have been relieved of duty and face a number of charges, including second-degree murder. Four of the five officers were released on bond last Thursday.

However, it’s unknown if Hemphill will face similar charges.
