Thousands of people put on their running shoes early Friday morning and finished Eliza Fletcher’s run that ended abruptly one week ago today.

“The run this morning gave Memphians a reason to stay here,” said State Senate Candidate Brent Taylor said on Wake Up Memphis. “What we saw this morning was the spirit of Memphis. We are Memphis.”

The runners started at Central and Belvedere at 4:20 a.m. — the time police say Fletcher was kidnapped. Participants stopped during the morning run to pay respects at the exact location the runner was snatched from Zach Curlin Street.

Race organizers for the run say it’s important that women feel safe to run and that violent criminals will not stop them from running like Eliza.
