Tennessee Tech Under Fire for Hosting Drag Shows Mocking Christians

Tennessee Tech University is under fire after its theatre department put on a drag show for children.

Landon Starbuck, the wife of former Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District candidate Robby Starbuck, posted the disturbing video to social media, slamming the university and calling on parents to be aware of what is happening on college campuses.

“Tennessee Tech University hosted a drag show that had little kids handing cash to the drag queen who was performing a dance clearly meant to mock Christians. Every parent who pays to send their kids to @Tennesseetech deserves to know that this is what they’re allowing on campus,” Starbuck wrote on Twitter.

In the video, performers are dressed like Catholic monks. One drag queen does the sign of the cross.

At one point, one drag queen drops the robe while children rush the stage and hand cash to performers.

Tech President Phil Oldham weighed in on the controversy, calling the performance “obscene.”

I also am offended by disparaging mockery toward any religious group. To be clear, this was not a university-sponsored event. No university funds were used. Two registered student groups facilitated the scheduling and promotion of the event.

Although registered student organizations have the ability to reserve space on campus, the programming should not include obscene, lewd or explicit activities.

Oldham said the university is investigating how these performers ended up on stage on campus.
