Longtime Democrat John Deberry is now being forced to run as an Independent candidate after he was kicked out of the party because of his conservative values and pro-life stance.

Deberry tells ‘Wake Up Memphis’ with Robyn Walensky some schools are “weaponizing” the topic of race.

Walensky asks Deberry to react to the current local news of a Memphis mother, who is pulling her ten-year-old son out of school after she found out he is being taught about racial injustice in a fifth grade English class.

During virtual learning her son was shown images of black men and women killed by law enforcement, including images of George Floyd.

Deberry says he would be “extremely upset” if he were that parent, because as he puts it “this is not education, this is indoctrination.”

The longtime Tennessee representative in District 90 tells ‘Wake Up Memphis’ children that age don’t fully grasp what adults are currently discussing in terms of world events, and children are being taught negative concepts about this country that aren’t necessarily true.

“They are teaching them what [America] is not, that it is not a just country, that it is not a fair country, that the constitution has not been applied,” Deberry tells Walensky, “and you start putting these thoughts in their minds at an early age, so then you have what we see manifested in the country right now, we have a generation that has lived in America but they’re not American. They just want to burn it down.”
