Love is in the air but so are more fresh opportunities to scam, Daniel Irwin, Better Business Bureau (BBB) of the Mid South’s communications director, told “Wake Up Memphis” Wednesday.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Irwin warned listeners that it’s times like these that people will get creative and adapt to the current conditions to efficiently trick others.

“We see scams all year round but there are a lot of scams that are targeted towards Valentine’s Day,” he said. “Things like imposter websites, fake jewelry sellers and fake florists.”

Some red flags he suggested for listeners to be aware of include extreme discounts on items usually worth several hundred dollars, if sellers try to sell expensive items over money transfer apps, and if customer service doesn’t respond or exist.

One of the things he said many people don’t realize is just how much money is spent during the season, with consumer spending expected to reach $26 billion.

“Be careful when you’re on websites trying to buy stuff, especially last minute,” Irwin said. “Just spend a few extra minutes and try to vet it out. Not only is it not gonna come, but you’re gonna be dealing with the aftermath of it when you should be spending time with your loved one.”
