Veteran news reporter Janice Broach from WMC Action News 5 appeared on ‘Wake up Memphis’ with Robyn Walensky to discuss the very latest details about the tragic shooting of Elijah Lewis, the son of Grammy award winner Boo Mitchell.

“[Mitchell is] holding up but not doing that well because of the awful injuries to his son,” Broach tells ‘Wake Up Memphis.’

Police say Elijah Lewis was with his girlfriend visiting her home in Cordova when they discovered an unwelcome visitor. A man who allegedly knows his girlfriend was sitting in the house for hours and had been waiting for her to come home, and when they walked in detectives say the gunman shot Lewis and beat him.

Memphis Police say the couple showed up to the house off Beaver Trail Saturday morning when they saw the blinds in the front room move. They then went inside to investigate and that is when Lewis was shot in the back.

Broach confirms Lewis’ teeth were knocked out. He remains in the hospital and is reportedly paralyzed from the waist down. Family members are praying for a miracle that he can someday walk again. The bullet went through Lewis’ spinal cord, and he has reportedly lost feeling in his legs.

“He will recover, but they’re not exactly sure how,” Broach tells Walensky.

Glenn Smith has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Boo Mitchell won a Grammy in 2016 for “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, which was recorded at Mitchell’s Royal Studio in Memphis.
