A lot of people are falling for a new scam targeting AT&T and DirecTV customers, Daniel Irwin, BBB of the Mid South’s communications director, told “Wake Up Memphis” Wednesday.

Irwin noted they’ve been notified of fake calls from phony AT&T workers who have already claimed up to $600 from 19 people.

“When we talk to victims, they said they fell for it because not only were the scammers able to access their TVs, but DirecTV showed up on their caller ID,” he said.

The scams claim to have an irresistible offer of premium channels for only $100/month and up to 50% off their bills.

It entices victims by showing appreciation for their loyalty to AT&T and offering to help them save money due to inflation.

“The catch is you have to pay six months in advance using gift cards,” he said. “Remember, the biggest red flag is when they start asking you for gift cards. Gift cards are for gifts, not payments.”
