What started as a typical Sunday morning in Lakeland for Kevin Reynolds quickly turned into a moment of crisis when he found himself in the middle of a carjacking attempt.

He joined Wake Up Memphis for an exclusive interview with KWAM host Ben Deeter and shared all the details.

As he was headed to the gym, Reynolds believed he may have interrupted the suspects as they were scoping out vehicles to break into. When he continued driving, their vehicle suddenly pulled right in front of his, blocking the way forward and blinding him with their high beams.

Reynolds didn’t have time to think, all he could do was react.

“My first gut reaction was to just get a little bit of separation between me and them,” he said. “Then they pursued me, so they escalated again at that point and time.”

He said a man then got out of the passenger side of the car and started to run towards him as he was trying to slowly back away.

At that moment, Reynolds punched his gas while still in reverse, clipping a neighbor’s mailbox with his side view mirror and blasting his car horn. He then spun the car around and was able to speed away while calling 911.

His main focus was to not escalate or engage the situation and find a way out safely.

“When this was happening, I had no idea the level of evil I was dealing with,” he said. “These people were criminals, knew what they were doing, were good at it. Let’s face it, most of us don’t deal with danger on a regular basis and you have to assume they do.”

He also noted that it is crucial to be aware of your surroundings now in Memphis, no matter how safe it may seem.

“Once they got me, I was as good as caught,” he said. “I had no idea what would be the case at that point and time. You have to respect the dangers that your in and there’s no question… I was in danger.”
