While many were respectfully observing Memorial Day and enjoying the long weekend, three cities experienced the worst Memorial Day weekend in recent memory.
St. Louis, Missouri, was one of those cities with a huge uptick in violence. Over the 3-day period, 19 people were shot and four were killed. Among those shot included several teenagers. In Chicago, Illinois, 39 total were shot and 9 have been declared dead so far. The Chicago Tribune reported that this past weekend was the deadliest the city had seen since 2015.
Meanwhile, in Memphis, Tennessee, 15 people were shot over the holiday weekend. Three people were killed, which is one more than the two coronavirus deaths Shelby County had during the same time span. The areas the violence occurred at ranged from Orange Mound to Cordova.
While in different states, all three of these cities had a similarly tragic weekend. It is disheartening to see such an important holiday for the country be tainted with blood and violence.
“I am outraged over the shootings and violence that have occurred over this Memorial Day weekend,” Mayor Lyda Krewson of St. Louis said. “Too many guns. Too much anger. Too many sad families. A sad, tragic beginning to summer. Please, no further retaliation. Put down the guns.”“Will We Have to Wear a ‘C’ On Our Sleeves?” Memphians Outraged Over Disclosure of COVID-19 Records
