When Chett and Dr. Sherrie Hopper took a stand for first responders in the 901, they had no idea of the shock they would be sending through the radio airwaves over half a decade later with the “Chett & Sherrie” show on KWAM The Mighty 990.

Originally called the “19 Strong Show,” Chett and Sherrie took the microphone on KWAM in 2015 to spread awareness for local causes such as the Chris Hope Foundation, Greensward Fight, St. Jude and more. At the time of their debut, the couple focused on fighting for first responders and their families.

In 2014, the City of Memphis took away benefits from the workers in order to make up for a budget shortfall. “The more I got to know these men and women the less it was about myself and more about them,” Sherrie said.

Sherrie came from the sunny state of California, but she’s called Memphis home for over 30 years. It’s where she found her husband, had her three children and even discovered her love for live radio.

“I feel like I am doing my part to bring awareness to major community issues that need to be addressed,” Sherrie said. “I also have to admit I love being on the air with Chett. He makes me laugh and sometimes can still shock me after 27 years of marriage. He keeps me on my toes.”

Both Chett and Sherrie attended Millington High School, as well as the University of Memphis. They rarely miss a game at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, and they’re members of the Highland Hundred booster club. Working with KWAM is more than just a business venture. Looking back at their journey, both voiced what it meant to be part of that radio community.

“It inspires you to improve and try to take it to the next level because you don’t want to let your family down,” Sherrie said.

Chett agreed, and he took it a step further.

“I love that they treat me like family,” he continued. “They still love me no matter how shocking or ridiculous I get.”

Currently, Sherrie teaches at First Assembly Christian School, and Chett is a public safety worker. The show just celebrated its seventh anniversary this July. However, both have higher aspirations for their weekend program.

“I would love to be syndicated one day and continue to host with Sherrie until we are old,” Chett said, “as long as we’re still entertaining.”

The show still focuses on community issues and solutions, but the duo makes sure the audience has fun along the way. Chett & Sherrie runs 10 AM until 12 PM every Saturday on KWAM The Mighty 990.
