Voters will NOT get to decide whether Memphis police officers and firefighters can live outside of the city after the Memphis City Council overrides Mayor Jim Strickland’s veto and votes 7-6 to not have a referendum on the November ballot.

Memphis City Councilman Republican Frank Colvett Jr. tells ‘Wake Up Memphis’ with Robyn Walensky “at the end of the day, it’s about letting the people decide, even when given yet another chance to let the people decide, it was absolute crickets, there was no consideration given.”

The decision by the council will make it harder for Memphis Police to recruit. Colvett explains “there were 24 children killed already this year, 21 of them African American. What are those numbers going to look like in a year?”

It appears the seven councilmen, dubbed “The Memphis 7,” clearly have an anti-law enforcement agenda.

Host Robyn Walensky points out this makes the council members ‘appear’ as if  they “know better” than the people they’re serving, and the “Elephant in the room appears to be that some of the council members, not all, don’t want white police officers patrolling black neighborhoods.”

Colvett agrees, telling Walensky “yes that’s correct, they don’t want Bubba from Tipton County” patrolling a black neighborhood “that’s at least their public answer.”

Currently, Memphis is looking to recruit hundreds of police officers, as many are set to retire, and others leaving the force due to the soaring crime rate.
