State Rep. GA Hardaway (D-Memphis) has drafted new legislation that would allow folks to file recall petitions for school board members.
House Bill 92 requires local governments like Shelby County to adopt a process by which local elected officials may be removed from office in a recall election.
“The goal is for the public to have the ability to hold everyone accountable,”Hardaway told WMC-TV. “And if the people aren’t happy, then they can make a change. That’s how democracy should work.”The bill comes after five Memphis-Shelby County School Board members have vowed to fire Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins – despite the overwhelming support she’s received by the community.
To recall a school board member, 66% of the total vote cast from the last election would need to sign a recall petition.
Here is how many signatures it would take to boot the five rogue school board members from office.
- Sable Otey, District 5 (2043 signatures)
- Towanna Murphy, District 7 (855 signatures)
- Stephanie Love, District 3 (1897 signatures)
- Natalie Mckinney, District 2 (1504 signatures)
- Joyce Dorse Coleman, District 9 (3205 signatures)
