Collierville parents are furious at the school system for the last-minute change in the plan just weeks before school is set to start. A group protested outside the high school Monday. Because of coronavirus concerns, Collierville will have just two days a week of in-classroom learning.

Collierville parent Anne Calderwood says the original plan accommodated everyone, while the new plan does not.

“I really am at a loss for how this could be justified,” she tells KWAM. “We’re cutting off our nose to spite our face.”

The original school reopening plan was released on July 15, but the school district wanted it to be approved by the Shelby County Health Department.

In the first plan, parents had the choice of sending their children to school five days a week or they could enroll their kids in virtual learning.

Calderwood says she wants to see the metrics. The mother of two says  it’s about “our kids, and that’s why I’m gutted.”

“It’s going to widen the gap between people who are achieving” and those who are not, Calderwood points out.

Another Collierville parent Emily Rice tells KWAM she is a stay-at-home mom, but many don’t have this option.

“I’m not an educator, I’m a parent,” Rice says. “I don’t see educators as babysitters, but they are educators, and they are essential.”
