Rep. Steve Scalise: Where is Outrage over the Death of Capt. David Dorn?

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise from Louisiana talked with Robyn Walensky on “Wake Up Memphis” about the current racial tension in the country and the state of the Republican National Convention.

Minority Whip Scalise remembered the situation with Hurricane Katrina and how the governor of Louisiana at the time, Kathleen Blanco, didn’t want to call in the National Guard. The same situation is playing out again in places like New York City and how they don’t want the help to control the racially-charged riots. Scalise said he wishes governors and local mayors would take back control.

“It harkens back to tough times,” he said in reference to the natural disaster. “Everybody kind of melted down at the local level.”

Despite all the division in the country currently, the congressman said he believes people want law and order restored. The original purpose of the protests, many of which have turned into violent riots, aren’t grounded in their original cause, which is the tragic death of George Floyd.

“Within a day or two of protests starting,” Scalise said, “you saw these radical Antifa-type people coming in and infiltrating the protests.”

While many are outraged over that particular death, the murder of the black, retired cop David Dorn has gone almost unnoticed nationally.

“Where is the outrage for that?” the congressman said.

The riots are taking away from the true issue, he said.

“It really does tarnish and desecrate the tribute we should be paying to George Floyd and the conversation we should be having about what happened,” Scalise added.

Looking forward to August, President Trump announced he is pulling the plug on Charlotte, and the Republican National Convention will be held elsewhere. Congressman Scalise said it’s hard to know where the country will be in August, so we need to plan.

“If we don’t start planning to be able to have large scale events, then we’re not going to have them,” he said. “The show must go on, as they say.”

The states that delay reopening will fall behind, while the states that are coming back safely and quickly will be the strongest, the politician said. As for large gatherings, Scalise said it’s ironic when governments threaten to arrest you for going to church, but when a church burns down no one is arrested.

“If some large gatherings of people are OK,” the congressman said, “then all should be OK, as long as you’re following safe protocols”
