BREAKING: Memphis Firefighter Killed, 3 Others Injured Battling Blaze

DEVELOPING STORY: A Memphis firefighter was killed and three others were injured battling a blaze Tuesday night on Rile Street. The name of the fallen firefighter was later announced as Lieutenant Jeffery Norman, who served for 20 years.

At some point the firefighters became trapped inside the house and were unable to escape. The officers were rushed to Regional One – where a sea of red stands guard outside the hospital.

“We are deeply saddened to report that one firefighter succumbed to their injuries,” the fire department said in a statement. “Three other firefighters remain hospitalized.”

The fire department did not provide information on their conditions – only saying they would be “closely monitored.”

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, friends and fellow Memphis firefighters,” the department said. “We ask for prayers and comfort during this difficult time.”

Condolences are pouring into the city from across the nation this morning.

“We’re so saddened to hear of the death of one of our #BluffCityBravest while battling a house fire in South Memphis,” May his family both at home and at the fire station be comforted during this time. We also continue to pray for the three other firefighters in the hospital who were injured during the same fire,” Memphis Firefighters Association Local 1784 wrote on Facebook.”
