Can Gov. Lee Remove DA Mulroy? House Speaker Breaks Down Process

Does Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) have the authority to boot Shelby County DA Steve Mulroy out of office?

It’s a question being asked after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) touted his record of removing rogue district attorneys and prosecutors in an effort to stop violent crime during the first GOP debate Wednesday.

Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R) told KWAM Friday the state has the power to remove Mulroy, but the House and Senate must be on board.

“It has to be a vote of the legislative body and so it would take the Senate in order to actually want to do something,” Sexton said.

Sexton explained it would be a long shot to get the support from State Senators who have been dragging their feet on other bills that would stop crime in Memphis.

“If they’re not willing to crack down on juvenile crime, how are they ever going to vote to impeach [Mulroy],” he added.
