The debate turned especially ugly when black Commissioner Britney Thornton said she was “triggered” by Commissioner Amber Mills “whiteness.”

Here’s what KWAM News Talk host Todd Starnes posted:

Shelby County Commissioner Britney Thornton said she was triggered by Commissioner Amber Marlow Mills “whiteness.” Can you imagine if a white commissioner had said she was triggered by Commissioner Thornton’s blackness? There would’ve been wall-to-wall news coverage across the nation, protest marches in the streets, and demands for resignation. What Commissioner Thornton said is flat-out racist and should be publicly condemned by the Shelby County Commission. At the very least she should offer a public apology and face censure. If she refuses, she should be removed from office. We cannot allow race agitators to divide our city any longer.

A number of furious citizens agreed with Starnes’ assessment.

“Racist at its core,” said well-known conservative activist Brandon Toney. “The commission should have immediately demanded a public apology in the meeting after her statement. If she doesn’t move forward with an apology, she should be immediately removed without question.”

In response, Thornton called the posting ignorant.

“Ya’ll going to be okay. Commissioner Mills and I have reconciled as only she and I know the details of our transaction behind closed doors,” she responded on Facebook. “On a different note, there is a lot of ignorance on this post. Healing is a choice.”

“I keep telling everybody Black people can be racist too,” added former Republican candidate Dewayne Jackson.

Starnes asked Thornton to specifically identify what was ignorant in the posting and the responses. We will alert you when the commissioner responds.
